Historically, exploration for oil and gas in New Zealand has been largely concentrated in Taranaki Basin.
This large sedimentary basin underlies the Taranaki Peninsula and extends offshore from the top of the South Island to just south of Auckland. All commercial oil and gas discoveries in New Zealand are located in the Taranaki Basin and well-developed oil and gas infrastructure exists in and around New Plymouth. Currently Todd Energy's petroleum acreage in the Taranaki Basin includes interests in six petroleum mining permits and Todd Energy also holds a further ten Recently, other sedimentary basins in New Zealand such as the Great South Basin have increasingly come under the spotlight as explorers search further afield. Along with extensive interests in Taranaki permits Todd Energy also holds exploration permit PEP 50117 in the Great South Basin in partnership with ExxonMobil. As technology advances and explorers develop new exploration methods, previously overlooked, discounted or under-explored areas can become feasible exploration targets. As well as managing our current permits, Todd Energy is constantly re-evaluating and assessing new opportunities.
