Taranaki’s coastlines kept even safer with new rescue water craft

Some of New Zealand’s most challenging coastline will be significantly safer thanks to the Taranaki Surf Life Saving Emergency Call Out Squad’s purchase of a brand-new, custom rescue water craft (RWC), which launched to the water for the first time last month.

The RWC – a welcome addition to the Squad’s existing rescue equipment – will be based at The Red Shed at Port Taranaki and will be a huge asset in supporting responses to the region’s water emergencies says Taranaki Surf Life Saving Committee Chairman, David Bentley.

“Last season, we completed over 145 hours on the water when called upon by the Police for assistance across the greater Taranaki region and, for the large part, these hours were completed with the assistance of IRBs (Inflatable Rescue Boats).

“While IRBs are useful in many rescues, rescue water craft, more commonly known as jet skis, are significantly faster and have different capabilities to IRBs, meaning the Taranaki public can be confident that surf lifeguards have access to the best gear for any water rescue,” Mr Bentley continued.

“We’re thankful to have added a rescue water craft to our fleet, knowing it will make a real difference to communities along our coast. It is an incredibly important rescue asset to have in our toolbox and means we can quickly and safely respond on the water when our community needs us the most,” he added.

The Taranaki Surf Life Saving Emergency Call Out Squad were hugely grateful for Todd Energy’s donation which made the purchase possible.

“As a volunteer organisation we rely heavily on the support of local businesses and organisations. We’re so grateful to Todd Energy for their support in purchasing the rescue water craft, which will help us to keep the Taranaki coastline even safer.”

Supporting organisations that help keep the community safe in – and on – the water, really aligns with Todd Energy’s values as a company, says Chief Executive, Dr Joanna Breare.

“At Todd, we’re committed to supporting initiatives that create a safe and healthy community.

“Sponsoring the Taranaki Surf Life Saving Emergency Call Out Squad’s new rescue water craft and associated emergency equipment will help ensure the Taranaki community continues to benefit from their critical service for years to come.”

In a water emergency, the Taranaki Emergency Call Out Squad can be dispatched by calling 111 and asking for the Police.
