WOMAD New Zealand shortlisted for two prestigious national awards

The popular three-day international music and dance festival is held in New Plymouth’s beautiful Brooklands Park every March and attracts crowds of up to 15,000 every year.

This week WOMAD NZ was named as a finalist in the 2017 New Zealand Event Awards, for the Best National Event of the Year.

WOMAD NZ’s Marketing and Communications Manager Cleo Wood was also named as a finalist, in the Emerging Event Professional category.

TAFT chief executive Suzanne Porter said she was incredibly proud of the work her team continually produced, “These two award nominations are a testament to the talents of our team and our dedication to presenting events that are impeccably organised, unique experiences that have garnered a national following.

WOMAD’s support from the community has been there from the beginning so this is really a nomination that celebrates Taranaki and our partnership base as much as the festival.”

TSB Bank CEO Kevin Murphy said, “The WOMAD NZ team produces an exceptional event that improves year after year and we’re proud to be associated with this world class festival.”

WOMAD NZ has also been entered into the Eventfinda public poll to decide New Zealand’s Favourite Event.

“Voting starts at the end of this week, we’ll be sharing the details on our social media channels once they’re live and we ask all WOMADers to show their support and vote for us – Suzanne continues”

Joanna Breare, Todd Energy CEO said they were delighted to hear of the nomination, “through our partnership and community initiatives we see children and artists come together every year for interactive workshops, this award is a commendation to the breadth and reach of WOMAD’s programmes.”

New Zealand Events Association chair Andrea Scotland said this year’s entries were of an incredibly high standard.

“Our finalists have pushed boundaries and set new benchmarks in dynamic and innovative ways,” she said.

“Year on year we are seeing a sustained growth in terms of the level of awards applications which we are receiving.

“Not only is that incredibly exciting but it also shows how strong the events industry is in New Zealand.”

The awards will be presented at a gala evening at Sky City in Auckland on October 11.

WOMAD 2018 sees the festival celebrate its 14th anniversary in the stunning 55-acre Brooklands Park and TSB Bowl of Brooklands, New Plymouth. Over the years WOMAD NZ has rightfully gained a reputation as one of the most beautiful outdoor festivals in the world.

The main stage is set at the base of a natural amphitheatre and not only provides a stunning setting, but an acoustic experience second to none. The other three stages are located throughout Brooklands Park, with every square inch oozing the vibrancy of WOMAD.

The maximum capacity for WOMAD is 15,000 ticket holders per day so you’ll never feel like you are in a mosh pit – in fact bring a blanket and enjoy refreshments in stylish chill out areas, watch a cooking demonstration or explore the stalls and workshops, the kids will be entertained at Kidzone with workshops especially for them spread over the weekend. WOMAD’s not just music! There’s plenty of other things on site to discover, come along and soak up the warmth of the WOMAD vibe.

The WOMAD campsite is situated next to the festival within the New Plymouth Racecourse and TSB Stadium. The festival site is also located a short distance from New Plymouth’s centre, if you book early you could even get a motel or hotel or house close enough to walk.

Womad New Zealand 2018 is on at Brooklands Park, New Plymouth, from March 16 to 18. Tickets on sale from womad.co.nz.
