In late January, the New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Representative Challenge took place in Gisborne in perfect conditions, bringing together teams from all over the North Island.
The Taranaki team, sponsored by Todd Energy, represented the region with pride and raced to the best of their ability says Taranaki team manager, Ross Lilley.
“Last year the Taranaki team consisted of 50 athletes in the Open men and women, and Under 19 men and women, competitions. This year the team consisted of 19 athletes in an Open competition and six under 19 athletes in the male and female teams.
“This year’s competition saw large, testing surf conditions with temperatures up in the 30s. Athletes were placed under pressure with the size of the surf and an event that was moving quickly, with only 3 minutes from the finish of one race to the start of the next.
“For a young team with only a few experienced athletes, the team represented the Taranaki region with pride, managing to secure an impressive second place.”
Todd Energy’s Community Partnerships and Public Affairs Manager, Hamish McHaffie, says that supporting organisations that promote participation in sport, active lifestyles and water safety, really aligns with Todd Energy’s values as a company.
“We always enjoy being able to support initiatives that create a safe and healthy community, and we’re proud to sponsor Taranaki Surf Lifesaving and the Taranaki Representative Surf Lifesaving team.”
