Karewa field

The Karewa natural gas field is located 45 km off the west coast of the North Island, and was first discovered following the drilling of the Karewa-1 exploration well in 2003.

With its original Petroleum Exploration Permit (PEP) due to expire, in July 2023 Todd Energy will apply to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) for a Petroleum Mining Permit (PMP) over the Karewa field.

This permit will allow for the development of natural gas from within the permit area, in alignment with the Government’s future New Zealand Energy Strategy.

Field facilities

If the Karewa field is developed, it is expected existing facilities in Taranaki would be utilised.
